Their ability to swell and form highly viscous solutions is one of their main characteristics. They are also low cost and relatively abundant in supply compared to synthetic polymers. The range of uses for natural and plant-derived polymers increases by the day and this has generated a lot of interest. They also act as diluents, disintegrant in tablets and even protective colloids in suspensions. In some cases, they are preferred over synthetic gums due to their biocompatibility

Comparison of Natural and Synthetic Gums in Production Processes

Synthetic, acrylic polymers are grouped into alkali soluble emulsions, hydrophobically modified alkali soluble emulsions and ethoxylated urethane resins. They are referred to as associative thickeners, which are water-soluble polymers with hydrophobic groups. Most synthetic polymers depend on the presence of an alkali to activate the thickening mechanism.

    Guarkernmehl

Differentiating Characteristics between Natural and Synthetic Gums

Natural gums such as the goma de guar are polysaccharides made up of glucose and mannose groups. Their preparation process involves refining plants parts such as the seed and the bark. latexes are extracted as liquids from plants which are heated or boiled to achieve the required thickness. Synthetic gums and resins are on the other hand prepared through a chemical mixing process. This makes it easier for modification of their properties. Natural gums have more complicated modification processes and it is worthy to note that they are more acceptable in food processing.

  • Guar gum is available in different forms which include food grade guar gum, commercial or industrial grade guar gum and the fast hydration guar gum. Every form of guar gum is different from others with regard to its specifications; however the basic abilities like thickening, stabilizing capacity, water-solubility, film forming and viscosity control properties remain intact across the forms.

The guar gum (guarkernmehl or goma guar) is obtained from the seeds of leguminous crop called guar which is grown abundantly in countries like India and Pakistan. The seeds are subjected to various processes like hydration, drying, grinding, polishing etc. to obtain the required form of product with desired specifications and properties.

    Food Grade Guar Gum

The food grade guar gum is an edible form of guar gum which can be used in various food applications ranging from regular preparations in a kitchen to the bulk food processing applications in industries. The edible guar gum is processed in hygienic facilities with the advanced machineries under quality control measures. The most important applications of edible goma guar are in the form of thickening and binding substitutes in various preparations which include baking and thickening of liquid preparations like soups or beverages. While in baking industry, guar plays an important substitute for flour in making gluten-free recipes, it gives the required thickness, texture and viscosity to the soups, beverages and other liquid preparations. It is cold water soluble, and when added in concentrations as low as 0.5%, can provide quick and effective thickening to a variety of liquids. Very often guar gum powder is added in ice cream preparations in order to prevent the crystal formation in it while improving its texture, mouth feel and body. It improves the stability and appearance of salad dressings, sauces and ketchups in condiments and helps in maintaining homogeneity and texture of dairy products.

    Industrial Grade Guar Gum

Not only for food, guar gum powder is an important ingredient for various commercial and industrial applications too. The type of guar gum used in commercial processes is an industrial grade powder processed to meet the applications in industries. Applications of commercial grade guar gum include processes like sizing, finishing and printing of textiles, sheet formation process in paper industry, waterproofing in explosives, cosmetics manufacturing, oil and gas drilling, hydraulic fracturing, mining and as a binding agent in tablet formulations in pharma industry.

  • Guar gum, the white colored powder processed from the seeds of the legume plant, guar, is an important entity for several industrial applications. Sizing, finishing and printing of textiles, sheet formation in paper industry, waterproofing in explosives manufacturing process, production of cosmetics and toiletries, oil and gas drilling, pharmaceutical, mining are all the commercial applications of guar gum. The powdered guar is preferred for its excellent solubility in water at all temperatures, viscosity, film forming, stabilizing, emulsifying and gelling properties. However the most important and primary application of guar gum powder is in the form of a thickening agent.

Thickening agent is a product which improves viscosity and gives a thicker texture to a liquid or food dish by absorbing the water content in it.

Guar-Gum-Powder-2Guar gum as a thickening agent is an important product for applications in food industry. The so-called guarkernmehl (guar gum as popularly called in German) is very economical as compared to the other forms of gums or alternative thickening additives used in food preparations. It’s affordable costs and invaluable thickening and binding capacities make it an important substance for addition in loose preparations like soups. It has almost eight times the water-thickening capacity than that of cornstarch and therefore with just little addition of the product, sufficient viscosity or thickness can be produced in the watery products. The addition of edible guar gum to the food products will not effect it’s taste or other valuable properties. Instead the body and texture will improve thereby giving a good-mouth watering look to the food preparations.

As a thickening agent derived from guar beans, the food grade guar gum for baking applications is used widely by the food makers. It is an effective binder which can very efficiently replace the lack of gluten in the baking products. The flour because of its gluten helps in better texture and structure formation of the preparations and for baking products, this gluten property can well be met with an efficient alternative, guar gum thereby helping in preparation of gluten-free recipes. It can also replace the whole grain flours used in hypoallergenic recipes.

Therefore guar gum as a food thickening additive has invaluable benefits to offer, but to effectively improve the texture, stability and flavor of the recipes it is very important to use right quantity of good quality product. Those looking to buy guar gum powder for food applications, Agro Gums can offer the best quality product at most competitive price. Agro Gums is a leading guar gum manufacturer offering genuine guar products including guar gum powder, guar splits, guar meal for cattle feed and fast hydration guar gum powder for commercial applications.Visit www.agrogums.com for further details on products offered by Agro Gums.
